From an undergraduate major in Communications at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, to a Master of Public Administration and a Master of Science in Gerontology at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, my story is rooted in a writer’s life. I am a lover of the classics, a life-long writer of prose, and have taken courses in creative writing. My professional writing includes magazine articles, newspaper columns, Congressional testimony, survey development for Fortune 500 companies; a policy manual for a statewide nonprofit; a national report utilized by state corrections facilities, and speeches personally delivered at national, regional, and state conferences. I have edited books, student works, professional websites, and job applications.
Over the decades I’ve carried my curiosity across continents and careers. Each chapter has refined my craft, deepened my empathy, and sharpened my ability to see patterns and find meaning in the noise of life. I apply my instincts to help others express their thoughts and find belonging in their pursuits. With student work, I teach the art of showing up. With all persons, I encourage integrity and honesty. It starts with listening, then building momentum, encouraging confidence, and opening opportunities.
I am fortunate to have been mentored by English Professors and English Professor want-a-be’s. Their criticism was tough but always appreciated. I am an avid traveler, a former Tanzanian ex-pat, and an adventurer at heart. I have called both the East Coast and the West Coast my home and embrace change. Having wandered across five continents and all but a handful of US territories, I bring a unique approach to writing. I take my inspiration from all that life has taught me and guide others to find their inspiration.
